All beads on this page are Cloisonne.

Cloisonne is a process whereby wire is used to lay out channels to make the design on the bead. Powdered glass is then carefully poured into the channels and put in a kiln at a high temperature. The Glass melts and flows to fill in the channel. EACH COLOR is applied AND fired separately. When all colors have been applied the entire bead is then bonded with pure 24K gold which gives it that yellowish appearance. The result is what you see. The art is practiced in China and to a lesser degree in France. The French copied the Chinese, who have been making Cloisonne for more than 3000 years. The French gave it the name Cloisonne. In Chinese, it is called "Jin-tai-lan". Prior to the 1914 Revolution, the Russians also made some cloisonne, the most famous of which is the works by the Czar's jeweler, Faberge.

DO NOT CONFUSE with the item often called cloisonne but which is really a decal applied to a bead and then baked on. These pseudo cloisonne are smooth to the touch, you cannot feel the wires. In the genuine article the wires are easy to see and feel. All of our Cloisonne is made in China and we import them directly ourselves.
Handmade item, designs may vary slightly.
