What is Gold Filled?: Gold filled is a method of manufacture that bonds a strip of a base metal to two strips of precious metal. The three strips, 1 base metal and 2 precious metal, are fused together by heat and pressure and become one indivisible piece. The process was developed about 100 years ago when the price of gold began to escalate. It allows for the beauty and durability of a gold product without the high price of a gold product. DO NOT CONFUSE it with plating. Plating is a very thin layer of gold affixed to a jewelry product to give it purely color, plating is generally only 3-7 MILLIONTHS of an inch thick, Gold Filled an actual veneer of gold applied in a sandwich. There are many companies producing plated goods under names such as "Technobond" and "Durabond" that would have the public believe they are Gold Filled when in fact they are merely plated and the gold has no depth to it. By Law, a gold filled product must be at least 1/20th (5%) of the karat designation of gold stamped on it. Thus, 14/20 GF means 14K Gold Filled, 5% 14K Gold. This is the one used most in the United States and Europe. There are other designations such as 12/20 GF and 10/20 GF however there are currently no companies in either the USA or Europe producing the raw material for Gold Filled products of anything less than 14/20. GF products are produced on machines that apply upwards of 100 TONS of pressure which has the end result of the layers fusing into a single piece which can then be made into almost anything usable in the jewelry industry. It can be drawn out (wire), stamped (findings), tubed (beads and crimps) but it cannot be cast; there is no such thing as a Gold Filled Casting. Use Gold Filled with confidence, it will never wear off nor will it discolor under normal use. If it does discolor it can be cleaned the same way Sterling Silver can be cleaned. Plated goods, on the other hand, will discolor and cannot be cleaned.
